St John’s Wort
This wonderful plant is found on roadsides and on paths all over the island of Ithaca at this time of year. It can be identified by it’s two vertical leaves and when you rub the flower between your fingers a purple dye is released This plant is perhaps best known in the UK for it’s healing properties for depression and I have used the tincture many times when feeling low.
In Greece it is used as a remedy for back ache, arthritis and cuts and grazes. The flower is dried and added to olive oil and left in the sunshine for forty days, the oil turns rub red and is applied to the infected or sore area with care as too much may cause skin irritation.
Next time Sage.
